HOW LITHIUM BURNS
Lithium-ion batteries contain a flammable electrolyte and store substantial energy. If the battery generates more heat than it can dissipate, a process called thermal runaway occurs, potentially leading to fire or explosion. Several factors contribute to this hazardous condition:
- Overcharging: Exceeding the battery’s voltage limit can cause the electrolyte to degrade, leading to overheating.
- Physical Damage: Punctures, crushing, or other mechanical stress can compromise internal components, resulting in heat build-up.
- High Temperatures: Exposure to excessive external heat, such as leaving a device in a hot car, can accelerate thermal runaway.
- Manufacturing Defects: Poor quality materials or faulty production processes can increase the likelihood of internal short circuits.
- Lithium Plating: The formation of metallic lithium on the anode surface can create internal short circuits.
- External Heat Sources: Proximity to flames or other heat sources can trigger a reaction within the battery.
WHY DCP DOESN'T WORK ON LITHIUM ?
• DCP extinguishers are designed mainly for ordinary combustible, liquid, and electrical fires — not thermal runaway lithium battery fires.
• Lithium batteries generate their own oxygen during thermal runaway, meaning the fire can continue burning even after being covered by DCP powder.
• DCP powder may temporarily knock down visible flames but often does not cool the battery cells sufficiently to stop re-ignition.
• Lithium battery fires burn at extremely high temperatures and can rapidly re-ignite minutes or even hours later.
• DCP extinguishers do not penetrate deeply into battery cells to effectively cool and suppress the internal chemical reaction.
• Lithium fires can release toxic gases, explosive vapours, and intense
heat, making them highly dangerous to humans and surrounding property.
• Specialized suppression agents and immediate emergency response are strongly recommended for lithium battery related fires.
